A Dangerous Prayer for Ordinary Disciples
A resource to help you pray with power, listen with faith, and move with Jesus.
I’ve been posting about how:
the harvest is ripe,
people are closer to Jesus than we realise,
and how we are simply called to join God at work.
It could almost sound too good to be true - but it is.
At the same time, I know there are people reading this:
who have been praying for the same people for a long time with no fruit as of yet. (Well done faithful servants!)
whose loved ones seem so far away from God
who would love to reach their loved ones and their city with the gospel but don’t even know how to begin
The last thing I want is to keep this blog in “theology-world.” It’s called “The Holy Go!” for a reason. It’s time we set apart our “Go” so that others may know…
So today’s post is super practical.
Today we’re starting from the beginning.
Prayer.
A Prayer Resource
I’ve been playing around with a Prayer Resource that I want to share with you today. (Downloads at the bottom of the page)
It comes with a warning though - you may think you are just an ordinary disciple, but this is a dangerous prayer! It has the potential to stretch you, take you out of your comfort zone and you won’t know always know where God is leading you… But it will be worth it.
This resource will help you
pray with power,
listen with faith,
and move with Jesus.
Let me walk you through it before giving you a couple of downloads so you can use it at home or on the go.
The Run Down
Section 1 - Introduction - We begin by working out who you are praying for. Let’s bring them before God by name.
Section 2 - Declare - The first section is about aligning our thoughts with the truth. We’re praying from a place of victory not desperation. So we begin by declaring Good News! Allow your thoughts to submit to the truth of the scriptures.
Spend some time thanking God for revealing His heart of love for all humanity including the person you are praying for.
Father I thank you that:
You love all people! (John 3:16)
You know us all! (John 10:3, Matthew 10:29-31, Psalm 139)
You have compassion on all people (Psalm 145:9)
You are drawing all people to yourself (John 12:32)
You don’t want anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9)
You want all to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:4)
You are the Saviour of all people - especially those who believe! (1 Timothy 4:10)
You said the Harvest is ripe! (Matthew 9:37, Luke 10:2)
Section 3 - Listen - Then we shift our attention to asking God some questions. Take this section seriously. Allow space for God to speak to you, and write down what He says. Listening to God is the sercret sauce of prayer! And remember, don’t be just a hearer of the word, but a do-er! If God tells you to do something, make sure you obey!
Spend some time asking God some questions about the person you are praying for. Listen for His response and write them down.
Father, what are you doing in _____ life?
How can I love _____?
Is there a message I can share with _____?
Section 4 - Petition - Now we get to the petitioning prayer. Once again, we are praying with faith in who God says He is. I’ve crafted a few prayers based on Scripture so pray them, then pray them again using your own words.
Father,
I ask that you would remove the blindfold covering _____ eyes so they can see You. (2 Corinthians 4:4)
I aks that I would have eyes to see what you are doing, and that I would TAKE and MAKE opportunities to love the hell out of _____. (Luke 10, Matthew 10)
I ask that my words and actions would be full of light and would cause _____ to glorify the Father. (Matthew 5:14-16)
Father, may you give _____ the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that they may know You. I pray that the eyes of ______ heart may be enlightened in order that they may know the hope to which You have called them. (Ephesians 1:17-19)
I pray that _____ would come to know, love, serve and enjoy you!
In Jesus name, Amen.
Let’s Go!
When I pray this way I find myself coming away with faith, strategy and conviction. I sometimes feel uncomforatble with what God has said to me. Sometimes the next step makes me nervous…
But what never ceases to amaze me is that when I step out in faith, I end up realising that God has been at work long before me! Remember, we’re joining Him in what He is already doing!
So let’s follow the voice of Jesus and watch His kingdom come!
